05/14/06 - Michigan Central Train Station - The MCS Whenever you cross the Ambassador bridge there is an enormous structure than you can see straight through...that is the MCS; a train station the operated from 1913 to 1987. It has stood abandoned ever since and it is quite the building to stand vacant. Instead of giving a boring history, here's some quick facts that I found interesting... -Once sold for $80 000 -Owned by the same people (Control Terminals Inc.) that own the Ambassador Bridge -Once stood wide open with no security fence (pre 9/11) -Was built to compete with New York's Grand Central Station -Film location for "The Island"
The Michigan Central Station ___________
Dziamaarsky standing with his t3
flashlight in the concourse area where people exiting trains would come upon...
Steve Davis' phone number
Some very large pillars dwarfed our
walk from the concourse to the main waiting room...
Along the sides of the main waiting
room was a small ticket booth that you could climb on and get a elevated look
around the waiting room...
Dziamaarsky enjoying the view...
The main waiting room's 56 feet
mocking Dziamaarsky's 5.75 feet...
Army had been
there 5 years before us...4th floor...
The large waiting
room goes up to the top 4 floors, then after that there was small roofs you
could climb out on...but after seeing this, we opted not to...
From the 4th floor we realized that
14 more floors was daunting...
Also on the fourth floor was a spot
where you could climb out onto a ledge and perch over the main waiting area...
Dziamaarsky in a space not meant
for claustrophobics...
On the fifth floor; a shot of Tiger
Stadium off in the distance...
Dziamaarsky
safe...
On every floor
and almost every space was spray-paint about Catfish...once I looked at another
site I realized it was a homeless man that occupied the building for years in
the 90's...
9th (?) floor had
many rooms for space and the marble tile falling off the sides in almost every
space that it could.
Throughout the
middle floors, there were safes everywhere...here's one with a giant hole
someone created to find out what was inside...
We presumed they
kicked the door off afterwards...
Found this interesting as well...there was wood paneling that had fell off the wall; only the glue remained and you could see that some worker had drew a glue woman to install the paneling. Just something
interesting to notice and wonder where that guy is now, likely 40 years later...
I see Brad
Laporte was here before me...
He must have came
with Donnie...
Looking into
another safe...this one was an entire room and I just opened the door and used a
flash...
The 13(?)th floor
had roof tiles similar to those ones in grade school with all the holes...almost
all had fallen to the ground...
Some roof
caving...
From the 15th
floor, a decent picture of the Ambassador Bridge.
Someone had some
fun with all this drywall...
Not really good spray paint, but a crazy spot as he/she likely walked across a 2 inch piece of metal to spray paint 15 floors from the ground. Props to Redford,
Michigan from Belle River, Ontario
Also on the 15th
floor was a cement balcony that gave us spectacular views...
We saw that
Canada was straight ahead...
That 15th floor balcony gave a good view to spot these people posing it up out front. While we were
there, I had to see at least 5 cars get out and take pictures / stare at the
building...
On the 15th floor
balcony looking at the detail on the corner of the building...
Donnie &
Dziamaarsky enjoying said view...
A view of not
just the corner but the entire 15th floor balcony / facade...
There was so many
floors built in the train station that the top 2 were never even finished...
Staircase to the
next floor...
Another view of
the front of the building...this time on the 16th floor...
Cutting this
elevator cable had to be entertaining...
Once we reached
the roof, the height didn't really bother Dziamaarsky, but Donnie wasn't
pleased...
Looking down at
the Detroit Public School Warehouse...
An overview of
the roof...
2 story
smokestack with the Ambassador Bridge in the background...
A shot showcasing
a view of Detroit...
Dzimaarsky
looking away from Detroit...
Dziamaarsky
having some rooftop fun...don't worry, there's a roof below the one he's hanging
off...
All in all, MCS has to be up there for one of the most impressive buildings in Detroit...I personally enjoyed the Packard better but I think Don & Dzimaarsky enjoyed this better ... especially Dziamaarsky with his t3 flashlight.
