MOVIE OF
THE MONTH
" You may wanna strap on a diaper, cause UNITED93 feels so real you might just shit yourself "
Okay, admittedly I felt like I had to bring some levity here. Many of us, including myself are still rather sensitive when it comes to anything 9/11. After all, it was only five years ago that we all endured that sick feeling inside when the events that forever altered our world unfolded.
So, I for one wasn't exactly rushing to the video store to rent what I felt might be a fluffy, patriotic, current event cash grab. Well, UNITED93 actually proved to be an insightful & very visceral movie watching experience for me. It clearly takes some dramatic liberties, since we still don't know exactly what occurred on that flight. But the film is executed in a pseudo-documentary style way that isn't at all boring and it also doesn't shove too much John Cougar "This is our Country" kind of bullshit in our collective faces.
I was pleasantly surprised by just how engaging a movie, that we all know ends badly, still had me glued!
If this isn't a movie you feel is worth seeing...fine. But don't dismiss it as "TOO SOON"
Because as one of the family members states...If not now...when?
I think many of the events of that day, including this act of heroism are stories that need to be told. And told NOW!
United93's director Paul Greengrass deserves a ton of credit for tackling such a project, knowing full well it'd be criticized as 'TOO SOON' if improperly handled. But I think he got this film right.
He provides a straight forward and dare I say, without being tar & feathered 'entertaining' memorial for the brave passengers whose acts should have made headlines that day. Instead, they sadly were overshadowed...almost lost...both on September 11th 2001, & in news coverage's aftermath due to the magnitude of the catastrophic events regarding the World Trade Center. Their courage may very well have saved the Capital Building from being destroyed & more importantly, prevented any further carnage if the plane had indeed reached its diabolical destination.
On a side note...I emailed several friends this ridiculous coin that the National Mint is selling...It supposedly contains actual pure silver recovered from ground zero & the Twin Towers portion lifts up and stands up.
HOW FUCKING TACTLESS! I mean seriously, this coin gave me the opposite reaction of the film I've just explained...
Awful.
Trivia Questions
Last Month Mike "The Trivia King" Monaghan correctly answered Phoebe Cates, who is the birth mother to actor Owen Kline. Mike was awarded a delightful bottle of Cat's Pee on a Gooseberry Bush...no, i'm not making it up it is an actual wine!
BTW...If you are looking for an absolutely amazing, yet inexpensive white wine ($14.95)...try and get your hands on a bottle of Ironstone's Obsession Symphony 2005. The ladies will looooooooooove it's pleasant smell & sweet, but not too sweet, fruity goodness! It can be VERY hard to find. In fact, a recent look on the LCBO's website lists only some stores in the Toronto/York area as having any in stock. I was lucky enough to land three bottles for the holidays...but it took some serious fanagling because it's considered seasonal stock. It supposedly sells out within days of our local LCBO's Roundhouse locations arrival.
Well, since my wine supply is currently needed to entertain over the holidays I can't offer a bottle of bubbly this month, but perhaps I'll break in the New Year with some more interesting Q's & brews!
I was suppose to list some Halloween flicks awhile back, but got too busy during that holiday, so to get us into the spirit of the coming season here's some Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer Trivia to test yer 60's classic claymation memory.
